At the CcHub, he engaged with students and was marveled at children coding and sharing ideas.

Next stop: Lagos! This is my first trip to sub-Saharan Africa. I’ll be meeting with developers and entrepreneurs, and learning about the startup ecosystem in Nigeria. The energy here is amazing and I’m excited to learn as much as I can.

Our first stop is the Co-creation Hub Nigeria (CcHUB) in Yaba. I got to talk to kids at a summer coding camp and entrepreneurs who come to CcHub to build and launch their apps. I’m looking forward to meeting more people here!

There is going to be a

Facebook Developer’s event tomorrow. Initially, top developers were billed to attend. However, with Zuckerberg’s appearance in town, he will be headlining tomorrow’s event.

Mark may be in the country to inspect Andela which he recently invested in. He may also be on the look out for other viable startups which may eventually benefit from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Lagos government shuts down 70 churches, 20 mosques, 11 hotels over Noise pollution

The management of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), has shut down 70
churches and 20 mosques in the state over noise pollution. Bola Shani, the general manager of the agency made this known in an interview with newsmen in Lagos today June 29th.
“Precisely about 70 churches, 20 mosques and about 11 hotels, club houses and beer parlours were shut and we’ve given them some directives to follow. We’ve been so strict now that we are not going to even allow make-shift churches in the state any longer. What I mean by make-shift, using tents and uncompleted building, we are not going to allow that any further in the state.
But I will strongly tell you that the level of compliance is more on the mosque area, because immediately you shut them, they instantly bring down their speakers or reduce the noise they make.’’ Shabi says the plan of the state government is to reduce noise pollution in the state to about zero per cent by the year 2020. “As at today, we are only able to reduce the noise level to about 35 per cent. That is not a pass mark yet. So, until we reach that target of 70 to 80 per cent, we will continue the enforcement.‎ Enforcement is a continuous exercise and we have set a target for ourselves. We want to ensure that Lagos is noise-free by the year 2020. With our status as a mega city, by year 2020 we will be free of noise,’’ he said.

Lagos clarifies incident surrounding street hawker knocked down by truck

The Lagos State Government has clarified the misconception surrounding the unfortunate incident where a street hawker was knocked down by an oncoming truck at Maryland Bus Stop on Wednesday. The street hawker, who was trying to evade arrest from officials of Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), had attempted to cross the road before being hit by the truck, which was erroneously thought to be a BRT Bus.
As a result, hoodlums armed with sticks and stones, immediately descended on some BRT buses plying the route as at the time of the incident and in the process destroyed several of the BRT buses.
But the Government in a statement signed the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, said that contrary to the information being circulated in the social media that the street hawker was hit by a BRT bus, it was a truck belonging to a soft drink company that unfortunately hit the boy.
“It wasn’t any of our buses that killed him (hawker), it was a soft drink company truck that unfortunately crushed the boy while he was trying to escape from KAI officers who were on patrol trying to rid the street of street hawkers and traders.
“But hoodlums now took advantage of that to start destroying government assets, including several of the brand new BRT buses,” he said.
Ayorinde said it took the intervention of a team from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) to quell the riotous scene caused by the hoodlums before the corpse of the boy was taken to the morgue at the General Hospital, Ikeja.
The Commissioner said that at least three hoodlums alleged to have been part of the mob that destroyed the BRT buses have been arrested, saying that the law would take its full course.
“The Lagos State Government would like to use this opportunity to further reiterate that it would not relent in ridding the state of illegality, street trading and hawking,” he said.
Ayorinde said that Section one of the Lagos State Street Trading and Illegal Market Prohibition Law 2003, restricts street trading and hawking in the metropolis, while Sections Seven and Eight of the same law gives jurisdiction and power to the Special Court to order the seizure and public auction of items impounded from street traders.
Section 10 of the law, he said, also prescribes a N5000 fine or three months imprisonment upon conviction.
“Street traders are hereby urged to desist from this illegal activity because the government will not be blackmailed and would do that which is necessary.
“And for the miscreants and hoodlums, the Lagos State Government and the Police Command would not allow any act of civil disobedience and those arrested would be dealt with in accordance with the law and further arrests would be made as investigation continues,” he said.

World’s heaviest 10-year-old who eats 5meals a day & can’t walk, put on a crash diet by parents who fear he’ll die (photos)

A 10 year old boy Arya Permana who eats 5 meals a day, weighs 30 Stone (192kg) and quit school because he can’t walk, has now been put on a special diet by his parents who feel he’s going to die.

The boy, who is the world’s fattest 10 year old, gobbles down the heavy meals, consisting of rice, fish, beef, vegetable soup and Tempeh – a traditional soy patty – which is normally enough to feed two adults.

His parents have been unable to find clothes that fit him, leading to Arya wearing just a sarong.

His mother Rokayah Somantri said: “My son is growing up at a rapid rate and I am worried for his health.I do not know any other way to stop him from gaining more weight than to give him less food.
He is perpetually hungry and has an enormous diet, and can actually eat meals of two adults at one time.
“He is always tired and complains of shortness of breath. He only eats and sleeps, and when he is not done with both, he jumps into the bathtub and stays there for hours. There is no other pain than seeing your own child suffering. My son does not go to school because he cannot walk on his own and needs my round-the-clock assistance. He can only take small steps before he loses balance. I wish to see my son studying and playing with other kids in the neighbourhood.”
“Arya was fatter than my first son and other children in the village but we did not think it was a matter of concern. We were happy to see him fuller and considered him to be a happy, healthy child. But it was only a few years later when he bloated and his weight went out of control, we realised he was suffering from a disorder and needed medical attention.”
Dad Ade, who makes £100 a month, said:
“They asked us to take him to better hospitals if we think he needs medical attention. I have spent money beyond my capacity on his treatment but I am a poor farmer and making ends meet is a big task for me. I have insufficient money to buy food to fulfil his large appetite. I borrow money so that he can eat. Of course, I cannot keep him starving.
“I am exhausted now and I cannot afford expensive hospitals. But I hope to see my son perfectly normal one day.”
Rokayah explained:
“No mother wants to stop feeding her children but I am unfortunate and helpless. I have started putting him on a brown rice diet. I am not sure if it helps, but this is the only thing I can do to stop him from growing bigger.”
